Five approaches to brightness control for Windows, compared. Every row below describes a capability, not a marketing claim. “Real backlight” means the screen emits less light; anything else is a picture that has been darkened while the lamp stays on.

How to read this

If you only use a laptop, Windows already does everything you need, and installing anything is solving a problem you do not have. Spend the time turning off adaptive and content-adaptive brightness instead, so the value stops moving.

If you have one external monitor and rarely change it, the buttons on the monitor are the most reliable control that exists. They cannot be broken by a driver update.

If you have two or more screens, or a docked laptop, a DDC/CI utility is the only approach that gives one control over all of them while genuinely reducing emitted light. This is the case the category exists for.

If DDC/CI does not reach your monitor at all — VGA, a stubborn dock, an old panel — an overlay is the remaining option, with the honest caveat that it lowers apparent brightness without lowering actual output.

Named tools in this category

Several free utilities implement the DDC/CI approach on Windows — open-source projects and apps published through the Microsoft Store. They differ in feature depth rather than in method: all of them send the same commands down the same channel, so a monitor that refuses one will usually refuse the others. Utilities of this type are a favourite wrapper for bundled adware on mirror sites, and the file you get from a third-party download portal is often not the file the developer published.
