FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Short answers. Each links to the guide that covers the detail.

Why can Windows dim my laptop but not my monitor?

The laptop panel is part of the machine and driven by the graphics stack. An external monitor is a separate device that only accepts brightness commands through DDC/CI, which is optional and often disabled. See external monitors.

My brightness slider vanished. Did an update break it?

Usually the display driver was replaced with a generic one, or the Generic PnP Monitor entry was disabled. The missing slider guide covers both, in order.

Why does brightness change by itself?

Three separate features do this: the ambient light sensor, content adaptive brightness in the panel, and power plan or battery saver settings. Turning off one leaves the others running, which is why the problem seems to return.

Is a dimming overlay the same as lowering brightness?

No. An overlay adds a dark layer over the image while the backlight stays at full output. Black areas get lighter rather than darker and there is no power saving. See what brightness control does.

Does lowering brightness save battery?

Yes, and it is one of the larger single savings available on a laptop, because the backlight is a significant share of total draw. This only applies to real backlight control, not overlays or gamma tricks.

Why do two monitors at 50% look different?

The percentage is not a standard unit. Panels differ in maximum output and age at different rates. Match them by eye against a white document and store the offset — matching monitors.

Does night light reduce eye strain?

The evidence for blue-light filtering alone is weaker than the marketing suggests. Matching screen brightness to the room, larger text and regular distance breaks have better support. See night light and eye strain.

Is it safe to install a brightness utility?

The established open-source ones are widely used. The risk is not the software, it is the source: this category is heavily repackaged on download portals with bundled extras. Take the file from the developer's own site or the Microsoft Store. This site does not host any.

Can DDC/CI damage a monitor?

It is a standard control channel doing what the front buttons do. Some models respond poorly — flicker or a black frame on each change — but that is a firmware quirk, not damage. If a monitor misbehaves, stop using software control on it and check for a firmware update.

Why is the slider inactive in HDR mode?

In HDR the ordinary slider does not apply. Use SDR content brightness under the HDR settings to control how bright standard windows and text appear. See Windows 11.
