External monitors and DDC/CI

A desktop monitor is a separate computer with its own settings. Software brightness control works only when it agrees to listen.

Why the slider is missing

Your PC does not own an external monitor's backlight. It sends pictures down a cable; everything else — brightness, contrast, colour mode, input — belongs to the monitor's own firmware and its front-panel menu. The only way in is DDC/CI, a low-speed control channel that rides alongside the video signal.

Because DDC/CI is optional, inconsistently implemented and sometimes shipped disabled, Windows historically did not expose brightness for external displays at all. That is a design decision about reliability, not a missing feature.

Enable DDC/CI on the monitor

Press the menu button on the monitor itself and look for DDC/CI under a menu named Setup, System, Others or OSD Settings. Manufacturers name it differently — Dell and LG list it plainly as DDC/CI, some Samsung models bury it as part of a service or Eco menu. Set it to On, then reconnect.

Cables, adapters and docks

This is where most failures actually happen. The control channel needs continuous pins from end to end, and plenty of hardware in the middle does not carry it.

  • DisplayPort and HDMI, direct — normally fine.
  • USB-C / Thunderbolt direct to the monitor — normally fine.
  • Passive adapters (USB-C to HDMI dongles, HDMI to DVI) — frequently drop DDC/CI while passing picture perfectly.
  • Docks and KVM switches — the most common culprit. Many present a synthetic display to the OS and do not forward control commands.
  • VGA — no reliable support.

The diagnostic is simple: connect one monitor directly to the graphics card with a known-good cable. If control works that way and not through the dock, the dock is the answer and no software will fix it.

Watch for a second effect. On a handful of monitor models, DDC/CI commands cause visible flicker, a black frame on every change, or a refusal to wake from standby. That is a firmware quirk of the monitor and appears with any software that uses the protocol. Check for a firmware update from the manufacturer before concluding a tool is faulty.

Matching brightness across different monitors

Two monitors set to 50% will rarely look the same. The scale is not standardised, panels age at different rates, and a 250-nit office display and a 400-nit panel simply have different ranges. The practical method is to set the brighter monitor by eye against the dimmer one using a white document spanning both screens, note the two numbers, and use a tool that can store that offset so a single command moves both to a matched level.

The mixed laptop-plus-monitor case

A docked laptop is the hardest configuration, because the built-in panel and the external screen are controlled by two different mechanisms that need to be driven together. Windows handles one, DDC/CI handles the other, and only a utility that covers both will give you a single control. That is the main reason people install one at all.
